Privacy Policy

The short version
You can use the poem generator without an account, and if you do, we store nothing about you on our servers. An account is optional and stores only what signing in requires. We do not sell your data, run advertising, or build profiles.
If you do not have an account
What you type into the generator. The subject, settings and any personal details you add are sent to our AI provider so the poem can be written. We do not keep the prompt or the poem on our servers once the request finishes.
Your poems stay on your device. The editor keeps your recent poems in your browser's local storage, which never reaches us. Clearing your browser data deletes them, and we cannot recover them because we never had them.
Your IP address. Held briefly and in memory only, to stop automated abuse of the free generator. It is not linked to the content of your poems and is not written to a database.
If you create an account
We store:
- your email address;
- your password, hashed with bcrypt. We never store or see the password itself, and cannot tell you what it is;
- your name, only if you choose to give one;
- the dates your account was created and last signed in.
That is the entire account record. We do not ask for your date of birth, location, phone number or anything else, because nothing on this site needs them.
A note on what you write
People use this site for weddings, eulogies and letters to people they love, so the personalisation field often contains real names and private memories. That text is sent to our AI provider to write the poem and is not stored by us. Even so, please do not enter passwords, financial details, medical information or anything else you would not want processed by a third party.
Who else processes your data
- Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service receives your prompt in order to generate the poem.
- MongoDB Atlas stores account records, hosted in the United States (AWS us-east-1, Northern Virginia). If you are in the UK or the EU this means your account data is transferred outside your country, under the standard contractual clauses in MongoDB's data processing agreement.
- Paddle handles subscriptions and is our merchant of record. If you have an account, we send your email address to Paddle to check whether you have an active subscription. Paddle holds its own record of customers and payments; we never see or store your card details.
- Vercel hosts the site and keeps standard server logs.
Cookies
One cookie, and only if you sign in. It holds your session so the site knows you are logged in, and it is marked httpOnly so no script on the page can read it. It is a strictly necessary cookie, which is why this site has no cookie consent banner: there is nothing optional to consent to.
No advertising cookies, no tracking pixels, no third-party analytics at the time of writing. Your light or dark theme choice and your recent poems are kept in your browser's local storage, which never leaves your device.
How long we keep things
Account records are kept until you ask us to delete them. Anonymous generator use leaves nothing to keep. Rate-limiting data is held in memory and disappears within a day.
Children
The site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information or allow them to create accounts.
Your rights
If you are in the UK or the EU, you have rights of access, correction, erasure, restriction, objection and portability over any personal data we hold. Without an account there is usually nothing to retrieve, because we store nothing. With an account, write to support@poemgenerator.io and we will action it. You may also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it.
